You will hear a woman inquiring about swimming classes for her baby. Hello, Dolphin Babies. How may I help? Oh, hello. I’m ringing about swimming lessons for my baby. My friend gave me your number and I’d like to know a bit more about the classes. Sure, no problem. We have classes for babies from 8 weeks to 18 months.
After that, they move into our toddler class until they’re six years old or have passed all six of our levels, whichever comes first. Can I take your baby’s name? Kara Atkins. Can you spell that for me, please? Yes, her first name is Kara, that’s C-A-R-A, and the surname is Atkins, A-T-K-I-N-S. Thanks. And how old is Cara? Eighteen weeks. Sorry, did you say eighteen months? No, no. I said eighteen weeks, so that’s about four months. Perfect. And can I take an address and phone number, please? Yes. It’s 25 Bishops Road and my mobile is 07882 690 147. Thanks. Now what sort of day and time were you thinking of for Cara’s classes?

We have morning and afternoon classes from Monday to Saturday. What would suit you best? Ah, let me see. I hadn’t thought that far ahead. I have to drop my son at school at nine and pick him up at three, so between those times would be best. What time are the morning classes? They’re at 10 or 11.30, but I need to check when we have vacancies. Just a minute. OK, I can offer you a place on Tuesdays. No, Wednesdays at 11.30. That should be fine. Oh wait, no. I don’t have the car on Wednesdays. Anything else? I have a space on Thursday afternoons at 1.30. Would that work? Let me check my diary. We have baby group at 11, but that’s over by 12, so yes, that should work. The only thing is I can’t do September 12. The term doesn’t start until the 3rd of October, so don’t worry about that. Do you want me to put Cara’s name down for that class? OK, yes, thank you. Wait, I forgot to ask. What’s the minimum number of classes I need to book and do I, er, do I have to pay in advance?
You need to book for a term, but you don’t pay anything until Cara has had a free trial lesson. At this stage, some babies just don’t take to the water. So your, or rather Cara’s, trial class will be on October 6th. Oh, I thought you said we start on the 3rd of October. The term starts then, but that’s a Monday, and you have signed up for the Thursday, so that’s the 6th. If Cara likes the class, you sign up for the rest of the term, so that will be 8 lessons. Each class is £20, but you need to pay in advance for the whole term, so works out at £160. With the free class, the total is £140. I see. And do you know many children will be in Kara’s class, more or less? Well, we have an upper limit of six children per class, but so far there are only three signed up at that time. It’s lunchtime, so it’s not a particularly popular slot, which means she’ll get more attention. There may be one or two more kids, so possibly four or five, but it’s unlikely.

Will I need to get into the pool with the baby? I’m afraid I’m not a very good swimmer. Well, it doesn’t need to be you as a mum, though the pool is very shallow and lots of our parents are non-swimmers. If you don’t fancy it, Kara’s dad, a grandparent, aunt, uncle or friend could get in with her. That’s great. I can do it. Just one more thing. My parents live abroad and I’m sure they’d love to see a video of Kara’s swimming lessons. Can we film the class? No, I’m sorry but no photography or filming is allowed during the classes. However, once a term we have a specialist photographer visit the class and you can buy photos of Kara from him.
