Well, good morning, everyone, it’s good to see you all here. Welcome to Smith House. Q11 Smith House as you may or may not know, is one of the oldest residential colleges of the university. As you can see, the building you’re in now which contains this main lounge, the dining room, the recreation room, the kitchen and the offices was part of the original old house, built in the 1840s to be used by the family of George Smith.

That’s of course how the house and college got their names. The original house was converted into, a residential college for the university in 1940 and since then has continued to be added on to and modernised.

You’ll notice when you receive your room allocation in a few minutes that your room number either begins with the letter N, S, or W like this one here. The first letter refers to the three wings of the college which come away from this main building. Of course, the letters represent the three directions – in this case – Q12 north, south and west. Q13 Each wing has two floors, and so the next number you see is either one, or in this case two, and this indicates which floor your room is on. The number after that is your Q14 individual room number. So it’s quite simple to find any room by going to the right wing, then floor, and then room number.

You’ll also notice, when you receive your orientation pack shortly, that there are two keys. One is the key to your room and only you have that key – and the other is a key to the front door which you’ve just come through here from the street. Q15 This door is closed and locked at 8 pm every night and opened again at 7 am. You’ll need your key if you’re coming back to the college between those times. We ask all students to always enter and leave the college through the front door. You will notice at the end of each corridor that there is another door but these are Q16 fire doors and are kept locked from the outside. They should only be opened from the inside in case of emergency.

In your fees, you’ve paid a laundry fee which covers the cleaning of bed linen and towels. All bed linen and towels are clearly embossed with the name Smith House so it’s easily identifiable. Q17 If you want your other laundry to be done by the college this can be arranged for a small extra fee.

There are only a few rules here at Smith House and we have these rules so that we can all live comfortably together. The most important rule is that there must be no noise after 9 pm. Q18 There is also no smoking in the rooms or anywhere inside the college but smoking is permitted on the balconies.

All meals are served in the dining room. Meal times are listed in your orientation pack. Q19 Please read these carefully as meal times cannot be changed and if you arrive late I’m sorry to say you’ll just go hungry.

Q20 If you’re unsure about things, each floor has an elected ‘floor senior’ who is usually a student in their third or fourth year of study who’s been at Smith House for a while. The floor seniors will introduce themselves later today and answer any questions you have. But for now, I’m going to hand you over to Marney who is going to give you the orientation packs and keys. GAVIN: Yes, I’d like to get some insurance for the contents of my home.

DIANE: Fine. When did you move into the house?

GAVIN: It’s a two-bedroom apartment.

DIANE: What floor is it on?

GAVIN: Why do you need to know that?

DIANE: Because it affects the cost of the insurance. An apartment on the ground floor isn’t as protected as others and there’s more chance of a break-in.

GAVIN: Really? Q1 I didn’t know that. It’s on the third, no, second floor.

DIANE: Second . . . and how much is the rent?

GAVIN: Q2 It’s $615 per month.

DIANE: Good, and where is it located?

GAVIN: In Biggins St, South Hills.

DIANE: I see. And what things did you want to insure?

GAVIN: Well, what do you recommend?

DIANE: Well, the most important things are those which you would normally find in a home. Things like the television, fridge and so on.

GAVIN: I see. Well, I’ve got a fridge and a stereo system which I’ve just bought from a friend.

DIANE: Q3 And how much did you pay for the fridge?

GAVIN: Er, $450.

DIANE: 50 or 15?

GAVIN: Q4 50 and the stereo system cost $1,150.

DIANE: Have you got a television?

GAVIN: Yes, but it’s very old and not worth much.

DIANE: OK. Well, is there anything else you want to insure?

DIANE: How much do you think they’re worth?

GAVIN: The watches are worth $1,000 …

DIANE: For both of them?

GAVIN: No, each one and, all together, Q5 the CDs and books cost me about S400.

GAVIN: How much will the insurance cost?

DIANE: Sure, just let me get the details down. So that’s Mr …

DIANE: And the address is?

As chief curator of the gallery, I was given the honor of presenting the first lecture, and let me tell you I had a difficult time deciding what to talk about tonight. But I wanted to choose an artist to have a wide appeal. That seems only fair, Yes but I didn’t want to talk about someone so well-known that anything I said would be familiar.

I wanted from one modern. My personal preference is for modern art. But again, I wanted to choose someone who had the potential to appeal toe all art lovers, whether they’re attracted to traditional forms, Impressionism, surrealism or what have you. So having spent the last five years as a visiting professor in Barcelona, it’s not surprising that I finally choose to talk about one of the greatest Catalan artists, one whose work is likely to be familiar to many of you Miro.

Look at this and this. This ring any bells. Miro most famous and most widely reproduced works tend to be like this Q33 bright primary colors, with lots of asymmetrical forms. Q34 He painted on large canvases larger than himself, Q35 quite often and his paintings depicted birds, trees, flowers, and other features of the natural world. But Miro produced a great variety of work, and it’s about some of his lesser-known paintings that I would like to speak this evening.

Miro was born in Barcelona in 1893. The son of a Goldsmith, he began to show talent very early and in 1926 went to Paris, where he was drawn to the Surrealists of Montanus. He did not define himself as a surrealist, however. He preferred to stay free to experiment with other artistic styles as he wished.

Miro had an intense dislike of much of the painting on many of the painters who knew. He wished to do something totally different to express his contempt for bourgeois art. And yet, ironically, Miro’s success has made his work much in demand among art collectors of the world. But we can’t really talk about the artist without looking at his art. And that’s what I’d like to do now to take a look at just a few of mirrors works on, think about what it is that makes him special. Special to me and a great number of people who flock every day to the Miro Foundation in Barcelona.

Let’s start with this. One of Miro’s best-known and brightest works Q36 Woman and Bird, a sculpture created in 1982. Q37 It is on display in a park in Barcelona, often known as the Honmiro Park, a huge sculpture towering up into the sky. It reflects Miro’s eternal interest in these themes as well as his more technical interest in materials. Q38 This sculpture is covered in mosaic, which gives it a naive and cheerful appearance. It is interesting that this sculpture was completed in 1982 just a year before mirrors death. I think it shows that towards the end he was feeling as playful as a young man. I think he wanted to share this playful nurse in the park on such a big, very public scale.

I know another representation of a woman. This time just called woman. Q39 This was painted in 1976 a late work for Miro and is the work we often see reproduced or on sailors postcards or posters in gallery shops around the world. So why is it so popular? I think the use of color has something to do with it. People respond to these rounded shapes filled with primary colors, especially on a large canvas like this. Also, the fact that while it is rather surreal, it is still possible to recognize the form of a woman and to see it of the sympathetic representation. It’s a bold, bright painting, and I think that it awakens the reaction in many of us.

And finally, something quite different. There’s still a woman, harsh, even violent work that was completed in 1939 Q40 at a time when Miro was greatly influenced by events of the civil war in Spain. Its title seated woman, too. But it can be hard to find the woman here as she’s been transformed into a rather horrendous creature. So is that how Miro viewed women as grotesque, not a tool. This picture could also be seen a strong with a huge base and solid shoulders to support those who depend on her. In this painting, her arms and neck seem to grow his vegetation out of her shoulders, representing woman as a fertile ground perhaps. We also see here the fish and birds, the moon and stars so typical of Miro work making her a creature of nature and of the heavens as well.

Sarah: Oh, I’m glad to hear that. Well, I’m also glad you’re in today because we have to work on a new project together.

Bill: Oh, Are we in the same section?

Sarah: Q22 No, it’s just us. No one else. Mr. Donaldson put us down as B team because we live near each other.

Bill: That could be fun. What do we have to do?

Sarah: Well, the project has partly internet research. Then checking reference books for information to Q23 prepare a survey which we have to use with people we know.

Bill: Great. What’s the topic?

Sarah: It’s to do with shopping over the last 10 years. We have to find out her customers have changed their behavior.

Bill: Okay, so what’s the first step?

Sarah: I think the first thing to do is to check the list of references he gave me. Q24 But my computer is in for repairs. So if I check in the reference library, would you be willing to look up some references online? Once we’re done with the reference checks we can write the questions together.

Bill: That’s fine. I’ll do the Internet research. So what sort of shopping are we looking at? Only food or goods or clothes shopping?

Sarah: Q25 We have to find people who are willing to tell us about personal things like deodorants, cosmetics, soap, and vitamin creams. The other groups are doing food, electrical goods, and clothes.

Bill: Q26 That won’t be so easy, Sarah. People might think those things are a bit private.

Sarah: Yes, I thought about that. I’ll ask the women and you can ask the men that should work. Okay.

Bill: Well, if you think so. Give me the Mr. References then.

Sarah: Sorry I left them in my other bag. Just this house. I’ll get them for you tomorrow.

Bill: Q27 Okay. Well, then, this afternoon, I think I’ll catch you up on the notes from last week. Can you help me? Are you busy?

Sarah: Q28 I’ve made you a copy of my notes already to save your time. Here they are.
