📝 Introduction to IELTS General Training Writing

The IELTS General Training Writing test assesses how well you can communicate in everyday English. It contains two writing tasks to be completed in 60 minutes.

  • Task 1: Write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal).

  • Task 2: Write an essay on a general topic expressing an opinion or argument.

This guide covers everything you need to ace the GT writing test—from structure and vocabulary to Band 7+ tips.

💌 IELTS General Training Writing Task 1 – Letter Writing

Time Recommended: 20 minutes

Minimum Words: 150

You’ll be asked to write a letter based on a given situation—this could be to a friend, a company, or an official.

âś… Types of Letters:

  • Formal: To a business, manager, school, or government

  • Semi-formal: To someone you know professionally

  • Informal: To a friend or family member

📌 Key Parts of a Good Letter:

  1. Greeting (Dear Sir/Madam, Dear John, etc.)

  2. Opening sentence with purpose

  3. Body paragraphs covering each bullet point

  4. Polite closing and signature

  • Use the right tone for each letter type.

  • Address all three bullet points in the prompt.

  • Keep your structure clear and polite.

  • Vary your vocabulary and sentence structures.

✍️ IELTS General Training Writing Task 2 – Essay Writing

Time Recommended: 40 minutes

Minimum Words: 250

Task 2 in GT is very similar to Academic, but the topics are less academic and more general. You’ll be asked to write about:

  • Problems and solutions

  • Opinions

  • Advantages/disadvantages

  • Discussions

  1. Introduction (Paraphrase + Thesis Statement)

  2. Body Paragraph 1 (Main point + example)

  3. Body Paragraph 2 (Second point + example)

  4. Conclusion (Summarize & final thought)

  • Plan your essay before writing

  • Stick to a clear 4- or 5-paragraph format

  • Support ideas with realistic examples

  • Use formal, academic tone
